Key features of a Music Video- BFI Source- How I can relate to tips given.

Andrew Goodwin, in Dancing in the Distraction Factory 1992, Routledge), Has identified the following features of music videos:

1.) Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (eg state performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).
* I can use this idea in my video by showing different characters through transitions. Go through what and where the character will be doing, seeing how the audience relate and see from the characters.

2.) There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
3.) There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

*I can take certain words/phrases of the lyrics in which I can link it to images in which I think relates to them. How I interpret the lyrics is differently viewed by other people, so I can ask my peers what they think of when they listen to the track. How they interpret the lyrics and do a comparison. Through the music I can choose how to visualise the different speeds in which I can use to make the music video flow.

4.) The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style)
*Close-up shots of the artist(s) could be used in my music video to develop motifs, yet I think Ed Sheeran-You need me and I don't Need you. Only shows him in the beginning as a fade in fade out shot. I think this is more so affective when genre characteristics are created because it looks more realistic story to believe (Ed Sheeran- A-Team)

5.) There is frequently reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, ect) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
*I like the idea of  the notion of looking because as the audience you feel more involved, like your on a journey in which you are travelling with the artist or/protagonist. Female body parts are key in the music industry in which women are objectified (e.g 50 cent-Candy Shop). Depending on the relation to women in which the track that is being created, I will decide whether it's appropriate to show a particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6.) There is often intertextual reference (to film, TV programmes, other music videos, ect).
*I've been looking at videos by Ed Sheeran, in which I like the story lines, how it pulls in the audience. I'll be looking at previous A2 music videos, also looking at the media-magazine to see if there is any music video tips in which interest me.

-Worth Considering:
Whether the video is primarily performance-based, narrative-based or concept-based and how elements of each are used in it.
-Reference to Goodwin categories- analyse music videos.
